Youth Drop-in Days

Youth Drop-in Days provide a hands-on learning experience for your child at a time when school might look a bit different for them. Families work together to move through three stations on a featured topic with a different activity at each station. Topics and activities have been specifically curated to encourage critical thinking and to fit in with Kansas and Missouri social studies curriculum. Drop-in Days are ideal for grades three through seven, although all are welcome.

Dates: Every Friday from November 6-December 18
Location: Alexander Majors Barn (8201 State Line Rd., KCMO)
Time: Drop in any time between 1:00-4:00 PM – expect to spend 45 minutes to an hour on site
Cost: $5/child, with a $10 maximum cost per family (Parents and kids 5 and under free)

November 6: Elections
Explore the history of voting rights, moving to the forward into the present election system.

November 13: Underground Railroad
How did the Underground Railroad work and who used it to escape bondage?

November 20: Community Landmarks
What is a landmark, and why are they important to our local community and the larger world?

November 27: Native People of Missouri
In commemoration of Native American Heritage Day, learn about the seven original tribes of Missouri and how white settlement drastically impacted their lives.

December 4: Gold Rush
Explore the experiences of those who moved west to find their fortunes – some who succeeded and many who failed.

December 11: Reconstruction
Following the Civil War, the United States had to find a way to come back together – a process which was not easy or neat.

December 18: Victorian Christmas
This drop-in day will focus on fun crafts (great for gifts!) that explore various aspects of Victorian holiday traditions.
