Love Bugs: Venereal Disease & the Civil War @ Alexander Majors Barn

Venereal disease emerged as a serious problem during the Civil War. The Surgeon General of the US Army documented 183,000 cases of venereal disease among the Union Army. Treatment was ineffective and included the use of mercury. Learn more about the untold story of sex and the Civil War with Dr. Michael Monaco, historical re-enactor and Kansas City Chiefs physician.

This program is the first part of our three-part Victorians Uncovered series featuring the off-beat and surprising interior lives of Victorians.

Never Forgotten: Victorian Hair Art @ Alexander Majors Barn

Jewelry and other craft work made of human hair flourished during the mid-nineteenth century as a way to memorialize the deceased. This unique art form was characteristic of the sentimentality of the Victorian era. Hear from Courtney Lane, Victorian hair artist, historian and “professional weirdo” and see authentic Victorian hair art at this social and fun event.

Many people are familiar with the elaborate dress of Victorians, but what foundational garments did they wear underneath their clothing? Enjoy a cocktail and learn from Civil War tailor Jason Wade of the Western Missouri and Kansas Chapter of the Polite Society.
