Civil War Field Day at the John Wornall House Museum is a unique field trip experience that allows students to meet and interact with Civil War soldiers, surgeons, and civilians while on the site of an authentic Civil War field hospital.

What will students see and do? Students at Civil War Field Day will have both hands-on and listening experiences. Classrooms will rotate through several different stations – each with a unique story to tell about the Civil War. They may have an interactive experience in treating a wounded soldier at one stop, hear thrilling stories at the next, and touch and feel authentic Civil War artifacts at the next! |

Why Field Day instead of a standard field trip? Civil War Field Day is like a field trip x 10! While we do often have reenactors at standard field trips, Civil War Field Day will be special in the sheer number of reenactors and activities available to students. Reenactors are actually camping on the lawn of the Wornall House, giving students a full immersive experience that will truly take them back in time. |

Why the Wornall House? The Wornall House, built in 1858, served as a field hospital during the Battle of Westport in October 1864. The focal point of the battle occurred at present-day Loose Park, one mile north of the Wornall house. Each side suffered around 1,500 casualties. Confederate soldiers commandeered the house in the morning, destroyed most of the furnishings, and knocked down the banister of the staircase so that stretchers carrying the wounded could be carried to the second floor. As the Confederates retreated, all their wounded who could be moved were taken away, and then the Union used the house for their injured. |

How does this fit into my curriculum? Students will learn what daily life was like for soldiers, both on and off the battlefield, how doctors treated wounded men, and how the Wornall family was affected by the violence and tensions of the Civil War. These activities fit well into STEAM-based learning. According to the Civil War Trust, “There is no greater place to learn about the Civil War than on one of its many battlefields. While not in the traditional classroom settings, our nation’s preserved battlefields still present opportunities to fulfill the Common Core Anchor Standards in a number of categories.” Some of these standards might include Historical Writing, General Writing, Science and Technical Studies, and Listening and Speaking. Field Day is particularly appropriate for meeting fifth grade social studies expectations, but all ages are welcome and will have an enjoyable learning experience. |

How does it work and how do I sign up? Field trips take approximately 2 hours (dependent on size of group). Cost is $7/student and free for parents/chaperones. You will receive an informational sheet with detailed logistics and expectations after registration. Some funding may be available for Title I schools concerned about cost. |
